Regular yard maintenance keeps weeds at a minimum and diseases controlled. Neglecting maintenance tasks means that at some point you will need to spend more time and money clearing out areas overgrown with weeds and other undesirables and replacing damaged plants.
With our busy lifestyles it is often hard to find the time to do it ourselves. We also need to consider our budget. Because we at Sunset Landscape & Design like to promote sustainable gardening, whenever possible we recommend native plants. This plant material is usually low-maintenance and drought tolerant, needing less care and watering.
If the homeowner is so inclined, we often recommend alternatives to lawns. Lawn care can be very time consuming and it is a challenge to produce (and keep on producing) a nice looking lawn. Ground covers, such as thyme, do a great job of replacing lawn!

- It stays a luscious green all summer, without being irrigated profusely (i.e., it’s drought-tolerant).
- It is free of weeds, eliminating the need to apply herbicides. Your carpet competes so well for growing space that the competition is choked out.
- It doesn’t need to be fertilized.
- It is also relatively pest-free, so that you don’t have to bother spraying pesticides on it.
- It is soft to walk on.
- It attracts beneficial insects, including honeybees.
- It never has to be mowed.
